Important Instructions After Root Canal Treatment
Important steps for managing discomfort, caring for temporary fillings, and post-root canal recovery.
• Mild soreness, tenderness on biting, or dull ache in the treated tooth is expected for a few days after therapy.
• Take prescribed or recommended anti-inflammatory pain medications as instructed by your dentist.
• If pain becomes severe, throbbing, or unmanageable, contact the dental clinic.
• A temporary filling is placed to seal the canal between visits. It is softer than permanent restorations.
• Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until the final permanent restoration is placed.
• Wait until local numbness has completely worn off before eating to avoid biting your cheek or tongue.
• Stick to soft foods and avoid hard, crunchy, or sticky foods that could dislodge the temporary seal.
• Continue brushing and flossing gently around the treated tooth to maintain hygiene.
• If mild swelling develops, apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek for 10-15 minutes.
• If you notice visible swelling, fever, or drainage, contact your dentist immediately.
• Teeth that undergo root canal treatment become more brittle and susceptible to fracture.
• It is critical to return promptly for the permanent restoration (such as a core build-up and dental crown) to protect the tooth long term.
