Important Instructions After Getting Braces
Comprehensive guidelines on managing discomfort, diet, oral hygiene, and braces care.
• Mild tenderness, aching, or pressure in teeth and gums is completely normal during the first few days following placement or adjustments.
• Over-the-counter pain medications (such as ibuprofen or paracetamol) can help relieve initial soreness.
• If severe pain persists, contact your orthodontist.
• Stick to soft, easy-to-chew foods during the first few days, such as soups, yogurt, mashed potatoes, and smoothies.
• Avoid hard foods (nuts, raw carrots, ice) and sticky treats (chewing gum, caramel, taffy) that can dislodge brackets or bend wires.
• Orthodontic appliances can initially cause friction sores or irritation against inner cheeks and lips.
• Apply orthodontic relief wax over sharp edges or protruding brackets.
• Rinse with warm salt water to soothe and speed up mucosal healing.
• Brush carefully after every meal using an orthodontic toothbrush or soft-bristled brush.
• Use specialized orthodontic floss threaders or interdental brushes to clean between teeth and under archwires.
• Incorporate an antibacterial fluoride mouthwash to prevent plaque accumulation and white spot lesions.
• Do not bite fingernails, chew on pens, or use your teeth to open packaging, as this can break brackets.
• Wear an orthodontic mouthguard during contact sports to protect your braces and soft tissues.
• If a wire pokes your cheek, a bracket comes loose, or you feel severe irritation, contact your orthodontist promptly.
• Do not attempt to clip or bend wires yourself without professional guidance.
• Attend all scheduled adjustment appointments to ensure treatment progresses according to schedule.
• Orthodontic treatment is a gradual journey. Diligent care and compliance ensure the best possible smile.
