Important Instructions After Dental Cleaning (Scaling and Polishing)
Important guidelines on avoiding staining foods, managing sensitivity, and maintaining post-cleaning oral health.
• For the first 24 to 48 hours following your cleaning, avoid deeply pigmented foods and drinks such as coffee, tea, turmeric, dark berries, red sauces, and dark sodas.
• You may experience slight tooth sensitivity to hot or cold items as calculus has been removed from tooth roots.
• Brush with a desensitizing toothpaste to alleviate discomfort if needed.
• Brush twice daily using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
• Use dental floss or interdental brushes daily to clean spaces between teeth where brushes cannot reach.
• Rinse with an antimicrobial or alcohol-free mouthwash if recommended by your hygienist or dentist.
• Refrain from smoking or using tobacco products after cleaning, as nicotine irritates sensitive gums and accelerates stain accumulation.
• Mild gum bleeding or irritation may occur during the first 24 hours. This is normal and will resolve quickly as gum tissue firms up.
• Contact your dentist if bleeding is persistent or unusually heavy.
• Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep oral tissues hydrated and wash away food particles.
• Schedule professional preventive cleanings every 6 months to maintain optimal periodontal health.
